Four weeks until race start

Exactly four weeks are left until we start the first race. On 31st August we will start from Portsmouth with a clear goal: circumnavigating the world. It still sounds surreal to me. I am reflecting on what I might have forgotten. For me there is another week until heading over to England for the final preparations.

The last few weeks have been pretty busy. I had my last days at work with lots of work to hand over the different projects and a nice farewell. Thanks to everyone for the good wishes and the genuine interest in my project. I would also like to thank you for the farewell gift, which I will gladly donate to our UNICEF fundraiser in your name.

And apart from that there have been a few last occurrences, at least for the near future: a last training, a last tournament as referee, a last visit to my favourite bar… It’s not forever, but it feels a bit strange to turn my back at so many things which I know so well. On the other hand I am looking forward to everything new and unknown which lies ahead of me.

Recharge batteries

Before we start the final preparations in a weeks time, I try to recharge my batteries. Currently, I spend a few days with my grandparents. I really enjoy this time together. Everything takes a little more time, which is ideal to slow down and recuperate. To me this is the complete contrast to everyday life, which makes it easier to also take some time for myself.

On the other hand I have some time to meet with family and friends. Most of them I will not see for a year. So, I soak up every moment. I enjoy the discussions, catch up on what they have been doing recently and what their plans are for the future. And of course we also talk about my plans. And so far I am not tired of it.

I will leave next week

Most of the things are prepared for my departure next Sunday. The bag with all my sailing gear is packed. Next to it is my sleeping bag ready to go. The only things missing are a few pieces of clothing for the stopovers, something to read and my necessaire. And then I am ready to go. Or am I?

From now there should be more frequent updates. Maybe just a few lines or a photo. Stay tuned.
